Photo du jour: Tropical shores {+ limu}

{For the August Break: Photographed at Kapolei, Hawaii}
The westerly shores of Oahu feel miles from city life. Tourists don't visit much, but I've old-timey childhood memories of picking limu (tasty edible seaweed) out there on Ewa Beach.

P.S. Here's limu used in a delicious Hawaiian dish called poke (poh-keh): comprising raw fish tossed with limu (see the fleshy dark strands?), sea salt & other yum extras...it's like Hawaiian "sushi." :)

Hm Hawaiian sushi? I'd definitely try it. It looks like 'normal' sushi actually... like tuna and those special leaves (what are they called again? shiso?)

I love poke! And Hawaii just makes my heart sing! I've been there three times in the last three years and I can't wait to go back!

I used to work for a guy from Hawaii and he made this dish for me! It was really good! ;)

Hi Cafe Bellini - you hit the nail on the head! The dish has definitely been influenced by other cultures, and not least of all, the true sushi folks :) That's scallions thrown in (but I LOVE the idea of shiso!)

Hi Dancing Branflakes - ooh, so fun to "meet" another poke connoisseur (whose not necessarily from Hawaii!) It's pretty yum stuff, for sure! :)

OMG, Hawaiian Sushi ! It looks so delicious, it looks almost like our (I'm Japanese) maguro-don = marinated raw tuna with rice in a bowl.

I have childhood "nightmares" about going out to pick limu, we used to go EARLY! and I also remember the puka shell searching days too!

Hi Fashion Doohickey - I do too, I do too (sigh).

Hi Kat - oh my goodness, that is hilarious! (I must have selective amnesia about the EARLY part :)) I remember puka shell searching too, but only b/c you reminded me just now, wow! Oh, Hawaiian childhoods :)

Hi Justine - oh gosh, it's not that exotic, believe me! :) (Public/social policy and so LOTS of government officials to deal with!) I'm lucky I telecommute, since my significant other is in London. I haven't been to Paris in tooo long, but I'll visit your blog to chat Paris :)

Hi Alternative Wife - thanks for dropping by! The stuff is pretty addictive, that's the only problem :)
