Mini world food tour: Doughnuts

I had no idea when I posted on Hawaii's malasadas that similar doughnuts were so universal! Thanks to your sweet comments, I got a delish education on sugary dough treats around the world...
Dutch oliebollen (thanks Signe and Inez!)

Jewish sufganiyot (thanks Ren and Topcoat!)

Polish pączki (thanks Just!)

Croatian krafne (thanks Elisa!)

I knew about this one, but I'll post it anyway!
New Orleans-via-France beignets (thanks Runaway Romantique!)

Another peek at Hawaii-via-Portugal malasadas :)

And much more fried dough around the world!
Is there a similar treat that you know and love?

Well . . . there is the American carnival funnel cake. :)

I want all of these, immediately! Especially the New Orleans beignets. I lived in New Orleans for four years and they are definitely on my "miss" list . . .

I just had a krafna yesterday for breakfast hehe. My daughter loves them, well actually she bites around the marmalade then discards it. (which means I eat the remains). And in Mexico we have churros, (long friend sticks sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar)

YUM! It all looks so good! I love all kinds of sweets, including doughnuts. But to be honest, I'll skip the Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme. I'd choose those malasadas any day!

I had no idea there were SO many types! And now I want to try them all. I found a place here in San Diego that does the hawaiian ones, though I've yet to try them. I'm going to look for these others too now. Thanks for the delicious temptations, my dear! Perfect way to start my morning.

In my adult years, I haven't been a huge fan of the doughnut... but this is pretty darn enticing!!! :) What about Mexican churros? Here they eat a lot of sopaipillas, made with zapallo (squash) base.

Jude - I never knew there were so many variations of what we here in the States call a jelly doughnut!!! No matter what you call it, they are truly yummy!! My favorites are the ones filled with custard (chocolate of course!!).

Have a wonderful day.

Hi Jude!
I have read this post thinking 'it's almost xmas, I shouldn't eat this stuff!'
But the reason I'm commenting on this post is the malasadas. I didn't know that Portuguese people had set foot in Hawai for so long and that there they decided to start doing 'pão doce'.
And then I read about your unlucky malasada-free journey to my country, I think I know what you are talking about and, nowadays, the thing that looks the most with 'your' maladas are what we call 'bolas de berlim' they look the same, are badly cooked inside (well in some bakeries) and may have a sweet cream inside or not.
In my humble opinion, the best ones are sold on the beach during summer time, because are freshly made every morning, are badly cooked, have this delicious cream inside and taste like heaven and you get yourself full of sugar. It's the only time I eat them and it cames with free-guilty feeling!
I hope next time you came to Portugal you will try them and then tell me if they are similar or not!
:) see you on the blogosphere :)

Jude said...

Thank you so much, Amiana! I'd love to return to Portugal and hunt down some bolas de berlim - they sound delicious! :)
