Malasadas are crispy outside, gooey inside - so lovely when fresh.
In Hawaii, they're synonomous with old-school Leonard's Bakery.

| Hawaii's malasadas - the Portuguese treat I couldn't find in Portugal |
Embarrassingly, I visited Portugal so excited to eat malasadas (like going to Japan for sushi!) - but no one knew about it! A Lisbon resident explained maybe it was unique to Madeira Island. (He also said 'malasadas' meant 'badly-cooked' - so I went around Portugal asking for a badly-cooked thing to eat!)

Jelly donuts? They remind me of the Jewish Hanukkah dessert sufganiyot (transliteration for that!)
my favorite is actually Champion malasadas, have you tried them? not as oily as Leonard's :)

But they sure look delicious and lot bit like the Dutch 'Olliebollen' so if you go to Holland and ask for that I bet you won't be disappointed :)
They also come with banana on the inside -- sooo good!

we have something similar here in Croatia called Krafna. we have chocolate filling, marmalade, and vanilla pudding filling!

Just woke up, haven't eaten and now I'll be thinking about these all day. Of course have no plans of visiting Hawaii again so it appears we are out of luck. Hilarious you couldn't find them in Portugal!

These sound and look incredible! I'm such a doughnut addict and my only disappointment is that I think finding these in my area is going to be hard. I'll give it a try anyways. And maybe I'll make my own.
Leonards on Oahu are the best! I love them filled, not filled, and warm from the fryer!

Malasadas are definitely delicious!

I've never heard of these, but they sure look wonderful. Almost looks like our version of a jelly doughnut, but richer looking. Cannot possibly be anything "bad" about them, other than the fact that I'd probably have to run a marathon to burn off the calories of just one

hey Jude! you should come to Poland -they are everywhere here- we call them pączki (which sounds like pounchkey). Originally they are made of yeast dough and filled with jam (or pudding, or chocolate)after frying them in the pot full of oil (they are so fat that I'm usually able to eat only one donut..)

We have a very similar dessert growing up and its usually in a long oval shape a la eclair but I'll settle for these - any shape!
They'd be soo good with tsokolate or nice latte!

I googled...Agnes Bake Shop, they have some good stuff there, especially a bread pudding...will have to try to get out that way to try their malasadas!
I mean that's just plain cruel! look at those things!!! Why on earth did i have to discover that right as I was starting to get hungry! Delish!

I've been craving donuts for a while now. Usually it happens as I'm passing a particular donut shop--on my walk home from yoga. I try not to give into temptation, but, well...mmm...donuts...
This is SOOO funny! They look delicious, but I couldn't get the mal asada meaning out of my head. I started to wonder: what were they were *trying* to make when these little scrumptious donutty things were discovered.
I don't like commercial donuts, but I love the ones my grandma made, and they looked a lot like what you called "malasadas"! She also added lemon peel and a little grappa to the dough, so it was absolutely lovely.
These look delicious too, I'd love to try them! If you find a recipe, please share it for those of us who cannot go get them at Leonard's Bakery ;-)
